On 15 June 2002, it will be the 300th anniversary of the death of the founder of Malesian botany, zoology, and geology, Georg Everhard Rumpf, better known as Rumphius (probably late 1627-1702). It seemed suitable to present a brief commemoration here. This being a botanical bulletin, I will mainly deal with the plants. Many articles and books even have been written about this remarkable man and the results of his exploits in the Moluccas, which have given him an everlasting place of honour in the history of natural science. He is the undisputed patriarch of Malesian botany, zoology, and geology. None has had such a wide and integrated knowledge of these sciences, and was also well-versed in pharmaceutical, architectural, juridical (local and Western),... |

During a recent expedition to the Burgers Mountains and Mt. Kegum, Papua New Guinea, several collections were made of a Vaccinium that appeared to be undescribed. With Sleumer’s revision (1967) the new Vaccinium keys out to the section Oarianthe Schltr. and then to V. oranjense J. J. S. (p. 767, lead 41). It may be fitted in the key as follows: 41. Leaves coriaceous and ± stiff, margin markedly revolute. — Corolla ventricose-urceolate or ovoid-globose, (6 —)6.5— 10 by 5-8 mm Ø. 41a. Small epiphyte or terrestrial, then creeping and ascending to 10 cm with rooting branchlets. Leaves when dry white-glaucous above, veins and veinlets obscure. Calyx distinctly lobed to nearly its base. Corolla pale pink to red, ventricose-urceolate, 5 — 6 mm Ø. Filaments laxly... |

In 1985 during the Fourth Expedition to S Aceh, Sumatra, in the neighbourhood of the G. Leuser National Park a representative of Sarcotheca (Oxalidaceae) was collected. It clearly is a member of the S. laxa complex previously known only from Malaya and the Riouw Archipelago. It differs from all by the golden puberulous, soon glabrescent innovations, the thicker, broader, more ovate leaflets, and the structure of the inflorescences (short, slender, subequally branched). In the technical characters it seems closest to var. sericea (Ridley) Veldk., but it differs by the leafblades with fewer pairs of nerves, the sparsely white puberulous inflorescence axes and branches (the hairs can easily be distinguished separately and seem longer), the pedicels with the... |

A revision is given of the taxa in Malesia and Thailand usually included in Anthoxanthum L. and Hierochloë R. Br. (Gramineae). There are two species, A. horsfleldii (Bennett) Reeder with 7 varieties in Malesia and 1 in Thailand, and A. redolens (Vahl) Royen with 2 varieties in New Guinea. A survey of the characters generally employed to distinguish the genera is given and briefly discussed to show that these give an untenable separation. Some new combinations in Anthoxanthum are proposed. |

In this paper a revision is given of the Malesian species of the Crabgrasses, or Digitaria Haller ( Gramineae). The research was done at the Rijksherbarium, Leyden, while many other Herbaria were shortly visited; some field work was done in Indonesia, Australia, and Papua-New Guinea. The foundation for the study in this large and cosmopolitan genus must be Henrard’s monumental work ‘Monograph of the genus Digitaria’ (1950), which is therefore extensively cited and discussed. Henrard based his division in sections, 32 in the subgenus Digitaria, with an emphasis on the amount of spikelets per grouplet and the various types of hairs, but such a subdivision appears difficult to maintain. As only part of the species of Digitaria occurs in Malesia, not... |

In Malesia there are two species of grasses here tentatively included in Helictotrichon Besser (Gramineae): H. sumatrense Ohwi and H. virescens (Nees ex Steud.) Henr. [inch H. asperum (Munro ex Thw.) Bor and H. junghuhnii (Buse) Henr.]. The delimitation and nomenclature of Helictotrichon, Avenastrum Opiz and Avenula (Dum.) Dum. are discussed. It is proposed to lectotypify Helictotrichon with Avena sempervirens Vill. In the matter of automatic typification of superfluous names Art. 7. 11 is in conflict with Artt. 7. 10 and 63. 3; a correction is proposed. |
